Who knew? I love it.Image from Canadian House & Home
It was (still is?) a popular look when I was doing my kitchen remodel a couple of years ago. Soapstone counters with subway tile marble backsplash. I thought it was too much (if you have a heavily veined soapstone like I do) so I am still waiting for backsplash inspiration to hit me. It is lovely, though. (Just a bitch to clean--because it's marble and because it's a backsplash, so awkward to reach if you are very short like me)
Marble subway tile sounds like heaven, such a good look.
I did this in my kitchen on the cheap. I purchased basic 12x12 carrera marble tiles from Home Depot and had them cut in half to 6x12, then installed in a running bond (subway) pattern. Gives a bit of a cleaner look being oversized and little less busy because of the fewer grout lines.
Who knew that America's Hat had such great design style?
are we going to hate subway tiles in 5 years?reminds me of my grandmothers old condo.
*L: I've never liked them. They really do remind me of a dingy subway station.
I just put these in my kitchen. Really love them with the white cabinets and honed dark countertops. Anon 12:39 has a very interesting idea.... And subway tiles are a classic (as is the marble), my mother-in-law, an interior designer, put them in her kitchen 10 years ago (just white, not marble.) I suppose she is old enough to be *l's grandmother. Hint Anon 3:26, if you keep your kitchen clean and piss free, they won't remind you of a subway station at all!
mmmm...two of my favorite things: subway tile and marble!anon 12:39- great idea!!
well, crap. now i'm in love. my two favorite materials for a kitchen, all in one!
Marble backsplash and soapstone counter are my fantasy materials. I am purchasing the 3 X 6 marble next week at $9/sq ft. I hope that's the best deal in town. I'm in So Cal with a galley kitchen. The 48in stone will sit against a bar/ split wall backing to the dining room. I want to put a marble slab counter atop the bar. I had slate floors installed on the diagonal. I plan on all white cabinets with the exception of the two on either side of the stove...I'm thinking a really dark almost black but with the olive undertones that are in the veining of the marble and slate. Any thoughts? I don't have a contractor I'm doing all of the design myself. I'm 5'3"
At www.BuildersDepotDirect.com we focus on small order of carrara marble 3x6", Hexagon, 1x2 Metal Mosaics and Glass for Kitchens and Bathrooms. We are partnered with Amazon.Com so our prices 3x6" Carrara $7.00SF are incredible. Please take a look for yourself.
Subway Tiles - I bought the perfect 4x8" Subway Carrara Tile from Builders Depot Direct an online company at $6.25SF - they made a mistake on the pricing good for me bad for them, as the price is now $8.00SF. I can see why it should be $12-15SF - it has a perfect white base and immaculate grey/blue veining. Shipping was $138.87 (got it sent to a terminal to save liftgate and residential delivery charges) and paid zero taxes. Sometimes online buying works - in this case I probably saved $2,000.
