Such a bitchin' cover, I had to share it.

I am collecting a list of songs people think are covered better than the original is performed. I include this one in my list. I also think that Ryan Adams cover of "Wonderwall" is magic.

What else can I add to my list?

People like "Heartbeats" by Jose Gonzalez but I prefer the original version by The Knife. Lovely song.

I've always liked Liz Phair's cover of Turning Japanese.

Corny, I know, but I like Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" better than the (brilliant) Leonard Cohen's.

Oh god, how could I forget Jeff Buckley singing Hallelujah?? I agree completely, his version just kills. Gorgeous.

I am getting some excellent reccos. Keep it up, kids.

Patti Smith's version of "Gloria"

Not actually "better than" but virtually as good as:

Kim Carnes's version of "Ring of Fire."

this isn't technically a cover, it but look how Avril Lavigne becomes almost tolerable in this remix with Li'l Mama:

Chan Marshall, I thought you had quit the sauce??

I almost prefer watching her more when she was quiet and could not look the audience in the eyes.

Celine Dion. What a buzzkill.

Oh dear. I agree with many of your opinions but not here. This version totally destroys Frank's vibe. Call me old school. Or maybe I've just been to too many bar/bat mitzvahs. It's certain different from the original but I can't say it's novel. Reminds me of too many riffs. Maybe a lazy bit of Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Hearbreaker). Thought-provoking topic, though. It's very difficult to craft a compelling cover of a song that was so good to begin with. Jane's Addiction's Sympathy for the Devil is bitchin' but I can't exactly say I like it better than the Stones.

My Morning Jacket covers "Golden" by America. It's much better.

Be the change, I think we're both sick sick people but I love that Celine Dion version too.

Decorno, you need my 15 minute version of Ryan Adams being an asshole in concert and covering Wonderwall. He talks about Beck's girlfriend dumping him and is basically just a glorious asshole.

I hate to do this to Tom Petty but I'm totally loving John Mayer's version of Free Fallin'.

-Richard Thompson doing Britney Spear's Oops. . .I Did It Again

-The Gourds doing Snoop Dogg's Gin & Juice

-Polyphonic Spree doing Nirvana's Lithium

-for that matter, the Charlie Hunter Trio doing Nirvana's Come as You Are

-Tori Amos doing Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart

-Nina Gordon doing NWA's Straight Outta Compton

there is little better than a really good cover.

The Petra Haden version of Coldplay's "Yellow" is infinitely lovelier than the original. Also, in the please don't hate me category, David Cook's version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" makes me cry every time I hear it.

As for whatsherface, I liked it a lot after I scrolled down and stopped watching her performance.

Perhaps it's passe, but Johnny Cash's version of NIN's "Hurt" moves me as does Living Color's cover of Tracy Chapman's "Talkin' About a Revolution" even though is nearly 2 decades old.

For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the band, but they were punk or punk-ish and they covered "Like A Virgin" - it was HYSTERICAL! There's even a belch in it. On the fun/funny side Ozzy Osbourne and Miss Piggy doing "Wild Thing" is just that.

I disagree about Rufus Wainright's version of "Hallelujah." The song is about a man who is sort of sexually enslaved to a woman, and that's a storyline Rufus just can't sell. (He does have a lovely voice though.)

Patsy Cline's cover of "You Belong to Me."

I love the Rickie Lee Jones version of "Autumn Leaves" because I am obsessed with that old song and I have like 20 versions on my iPod.

Jeff Tweedy does a haunting version of Blondie's "Dreamin' ".

As corny as it is...I like that Jamacian version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" I don't even know who does it.

Chris Cornells Cover of Billy Jean. He turns it into a lovely Rock Ballad.

U2 - Helter Skelter

Natalie Merchant - All I Want (Joni Mitchell)

Amy Winehouse - Valerie (You must YouTube her singing this on a couch in some interview something)

amen to jeff buckley's hallelujah.

adore ryan adams.

here's another:
even though his voice was shot at the time I'm also partial to Johnny Cash's version of Nine Inch Nails "hurt" beautifully rearranged.

In this case, Anon, Rufus Wainwright sings it darn near as good as the Beatles. I'm saying this as a huge Beatles fan (and not really a huge Wainwright fan).
