Wha?

I nearly choked on my coffee when I read this today:

"...some towns — like Wasilla...bill rape victims for the kits used to gather evidence of sex crimes. In most places, police departments pay for rape kits, which cost hundreds of dollars, but while Ms. Palin was mayor of Wasilla, the town decided to save money by billing rape victims."

From HERE. (The whole article isn't just about Palin, so to my 4 Republicans reading this, please don't go bananas. The article is about funding contraception and family planning.)

Hey Decorno- that was news 2 weeks ago, where have you been. This was proven to be a false claim.

robby said...

Yeah, it is old news like the above commenter suggests, BUT the story has not been proven to be a false claim.

Here's an article debunking the claim that the rape kit story has been debunked: http://mediamatters.org/columns/200810070007

Yeah...way to drink the kool-aid. It was the police chief deciding to bill insurance companies instead of using taxpayer money. Palin's camp has already issued a statement condemning the practice. Alright, recess is over kids!

Why doesn't Sarah just go pose for Playboy wearing a gun and a smile and call it a day.
You know they want her.

She's a......a.......ummm, a complete bitch.
A dumb bitch, at that.

If I see her spewing yet another one of her pursed schoolmarm-lipped declarations all the while jutting her chin and nodding her head I'll heave.

I hate to bring this term up again in your blog, but...

She's a misogynist.

Be the change..... said...

And why the victim? They should bill the perpetrator after/if they are caught!

Anonymous said...

To echo Robby's post, this is a real story which has not been "debunked".

The hideous practice of billing the victim for the rape kit, was an attempt to drive down the number of rapes reported and to make it harder for women to have access to the morning after pill.

Even if you overlook those two huge issues, how can you ignore that fact that this goes against the purpose of the American judicial system. The rape kit is not just for the protection of the victim, it is an instrumental tool in findign the criminal.

This is another example, among many, of Governor Palin not supporting women, the common good, or the responsibilities (and laws) of elected office.

Why can't the American public see how the insidious plans of these people (Palin and all her ilk) have permeated every aspect of our lives...

What if a murder victim was also raped? Should the family be required to pay for the rape kit?

Should we bill the victims of home burglaries for the expense of evidence-gathering in their home?

THAT'S WHAT OUR FREAKIN TAX DOLLARS ARE FOR.

She is evil.

Decorina said...

The story is true. The best connection I've found is that they did not want to give rape victims the morning after pill. They wanted to bill the rape victim's insurance company for the kit.

The right wing seems hell-bent on rescinding women's reproductive rights any way they can. All women need to understand what circumstances were before birth control was legal. It hasn't been that long ago.

Palin is truely a scary prospect as VP for Grandpa McSame. Chick Cheney. Ick.

How do things like this still happen in this day and age? We should all be scared, very scared. Look what it took to bring this out into the open.

Where is the Decor, Decorno? save the political junk for another blog or you will lose those trying to escape politics by reading DECOR blogs!!!!!

oh yah I posted that a couple weeks ago. not a false alarm it is real.

"...you will lose those trying to escape politics by reading DECOR blogs!!!!!"

oooh! Scary threat!

How can any woman, who has any sense of compassion allow this:
first you get raped, then you do not have the possibility to take the morning after pill and then to top it all of you receive a bill for the rape kit.

As far as anon 9.23, why don't you just go and read your decor blogs? The reason why I love this blog is that it offers so much more then just decorating tips. And as decorno has posted before, this is her blog, she can post whatever the hell she likes. It's not like anyone is forcing you to come and read it. Right?

buh, bye.....

I like the mix.

All-political blogs can overwhelm me.

All-decor blogs can become too Martha-Stewarty.

All-fashion blogs are just plain boring.

"then you do not have the possibility to take the morning after pill"

This is true anywhere, if:

a. You go to a Catholic hospital. Doctors at these places are prohibited from even mentioning the morning-after pill to patients, including rape victims.

b. You try to get a morning-after pill prescription filled by a pharmacist who is opposed to this medication. There is a legislative movement under way to let pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions they disapprove of.

"There is a legislative movement under way to let pharmacists refuse to fill prescriptions they disapprove of."

Here's what I don't understand - what if a pharmacist didn't like Eli Lilly b/c _______ (insert whatever protest). Couldn't the pharmacist then with hold insulin? Sure it's an extreme example, but it could happen by extension to the above.

that's scary.

That was a non sequitur.

hi all.

I really feel the need to slap some people.
I had lunch with 2 women yesterday.
One of the topics included Palin's interest in overturning Roe v. Wade.
One said she was scared of Obama's policies. the other said Palin and McCain were more in line with her personal and religious views - but she said she hadn't "been paying attention to what the candidates had said." Are you freakin' kidding me?

What's she's saying is this, "i'm sure she's a Christian so I like her instead." Jesus H.

They were blabbing about this on The View a week or so ago. I don't know why I watch that crappy show; it's annoying. According to them, or maybe to that idiot Elizabeth, Wasilla is not the only place where the victim is charged for a rape kit. Scary.

Some people are reluctant to believe that such a thing could happen, but in a small town atmosphere it can and often does, no matter how stupid or heinous. In our area several years ago they decided that locals should have a bigger hand in controlling Special Olympics events at the lower level. Well, some of the parents went wild and wanted their kids to win so they threw off the teams handicapped children who did not live up to their higher standards. I do not think the Kennedys would have endorsed that idea, but when things are controlled by the extra small local group these kind of things can happen. BTW it is true.

Anonymous said...

anon 10:52

Exactly. Some idiot Palin-type pharmacist could decide: "Since Eli Lilly [or whoever] manufactures the morning-after pill, I'm going to refuse to fill ANY prescriptions for drugs made by Eli Lilly."

or "Eli Lilly is a branch of a company that makes equipment used for abortions, so I'll refuse to fill scripts for their drugs."

Picture this happening in a small town, with only a single pharmacy that will take your insurance. And you need the boycotted drug urgently...

I wish Palin's mom had used a rape kit......

The viceral hate you all have towards Palin sickens me. Get a life. She has accomplished MUCH more than any of you could dream of - she is a strong, independent, woman with a fantastic record of standing up to the establishment in Alaska. You basically want to pull her down because she doesn't agree with you on abortion. Biden PLAGIARIZED, OBAMA has accomplished NOTHING in his years in gov't. Oh sorry, he co-sponsored a couple of meaningless bills in the Senate. Obama will probably end up winning, and with the team of Pelosi and Reid, we'll have the most left-wing, wack-job gov't around. Get ready for another Carter presidency.

Sarah? Is that you????

Anonymous said...

"...with a fantastic record of standing up to the establishment in Alaska."

The establishment of rape victims, who whiningly insist that the state pay for their rape kits. Losers.

So, I'm just happy someone else is using a term I first coined right here on this blog...Republicunt. I first put it in print a few weeks ago on this blog and someone else is throwing it out there. Love it.

Thank God for Mayor Palin. Those books weren't going to ban themselves.

Sorry to see just how divisive these things are. It bothers me to see that people stoop to delighting in playing juvenile soundbite games instead of focusing on the issues. It's not personal, it's political!

Anonymous said...

So, what are you all going to do about this???? If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Anonymous said...

I come down courageously on the side of "PRO juvenile sound bite games."

Dear Anon 6:56 PM

I certainly can't speak for everyone, I can only explain myself. I do not hate Palin. However, her approach/allegiances worry me.

When she became Governor she promised continued special support to Wasilia.
When she assumed the VP candidate role, she promised continued special support to Alaska

This approach left out a lot of the Alaskan population in the former and 49 states in the latter.

Sucks for me not being from either

That said, what is more worrisome to me, is with a failing economy, growing global population, frozen credit market (wait for it to hit the credit cards), oil dependance (wait until you have to choose between gas for your car, or food transported by trucks for your family, or medication to continue living - as most are petrol based) we're all, collectively, in the shitter.

Which to me means, we need problem solvers not name callers.

Yes, both sets of candidates made mistakes (shoot who hasn't) but at this point the Fear card has pretty much been played out (thanks Bush). And Fear, represented by Deer in Headlight, is inaction.

We've spent the last five years pandering fear and defense rather than investing in development, economic growth, education, infrastructure, independence.

I could be wrong but I don't see Palin understanding the concept of working together, compromising, team building to create a stronger Whole. I see her approach more as build a stronger Us and a weaker Them.

It's going to require a lot of work and sacrifice from all of us to get out the U.S. out of the hole it's in. And it's only going to work, if we all play nice, and nobody pees, in the sandbox.

So with my pre-existing medical condition with which I'll never get health insurance on my own, my stock portfolio down 78% (half my pay is in company stock), my house worth 30% less than what I paid for it, I'm ready to work with everybody to fix the problems.

my two cents, your miles may vary

As far as a Carter Administration, he at least put solar panels on the white house.

What a juvenile argument. "You hate her because you're jealous of her."

I don't support her because she is evil. I don't support her because she and I have absolutely nothing in common. I don't support her because she spreads lies and hate. I have absolutely no respect for what she has "accomplished", because she hasn't really accomplished anything.

And as far as I'm concerned, Hillary has accomplished WAY more than Sarah, and I've never been jealous of Hillary either.
