Kitchen counter.

We have an awkward space at the end of our kitchen. We were thinking of this sort of arrangement with stools, but now I think we just need to build a bench with storage underneath and then add in built-in shelves next to it for added storage.

Decisions, decisions.

Storage bench is much better idea. You'd never use the stools, and you'll definitely find use for a storage bench topped with a comfy mohair velvet-covered cushion.

We keep asking for a layout...

I have no comment about the countertops but those light fixtures are the bomb diggity.

I have a weird open space as well that has a window above it. I had a little breakfast bar in my old kitchen that was not useful and just looked weird. I vote for storage bench as well.

I've been thinking I would like a nice place to store my cookbooks in the kitchen.

The window in my kitchen has a view of the entire mountain range west of denver. It is my favorite place to sit and read. I contemplated a built in bench, couldn't afford it and use an upholstered wing chair instead. Love it.

I don't think anyone uses bars in a kitchen, I say bench. Also, following up on Decorina's comment, I know a few people with upholstered furniture in their kitchens and they use it all the time.

We had a weird spot and went with an L-shaped bench with storage underneath. We had the cabinetmaker do the benches. There's so much storage space you wouldn't have with stools and skinny counters. It's so much comfier, too.

No, I disagree. Don't put storage underneath but leave it so you can pull up a stool and use it as a desk. I am always looking for somewhere to put the bills, school notes, flyers, etc and I usually walk into the home straight to my kitchen not to my study. Also, in the morning when I am getting the children ready for school, that's where I would keep their hair clips, school caps, money for lunch etc. You could also put a computer there.
