Where to buy fabric online?

I found THIS fabric with 2 yeards left on the bolt and somehow convinced myself that I needed it. I feel a little dirty buying brazenly geometric prints as the trend slinks out the door, but oh well.

Anyway, here is my question:

What are the best places to buy fabric online? I mean, for really great-looking upholstery fabric?

I have been wondering the EXACT same thing. I'll definitely be checking back to see everyone's suggestions. much needed.

I know this isn't exactly the answer that you're looking for, but buying fabric online is so difficult because I think it's so important to actually see and touch the fabric.

Britex Fabric here in San Francisco is the most extraordinary fabric store on the planet. They have 4 floors of the most exquisite fabrics you've ever seen. While they don't have all their fabrics online (that would be nearly impossible), they do over a swatch service. You fill out their request form and can include pics or color samples along with your request. Their staff is insanely knowledgeable and will undoubtedly find you what you need. Just click on the "order samples" link to download the form. Their fabrics aren't cheap, but they are the perfect spot if you're looking for something special.

Check out: http://www.rubiegreen.com/

and Calico Corners.

I like www.decoratorsbest.com - they carry all the "to the trade" fabrics (Schumacher, Quadrille, etc) and sell to us regular folks. Swatch service is available.

www.insidefabric.com

It sells all the to-the-trade fabrics (which, now that I think of it, gives the lie to the whole "to the trade only" bullshit).

and

You get a 30-35 percent discount, which is about what I get from my upholsterer.

You can also search by color, type of fabric, maker, designer, etc., etc.

I have found some great fabrics at http://reprodepot.com/

www.buyfabrics.com

It's cheap and has a large selection.

I also like www.decoratorsbest.com.

I love geometric prints (did not know they were on their way out). My mum had a thing for them and could never bring herself to choose anything with a flower on it, so I grew up with geometric prints and a fair bit of ikat too (this was in the 70s, in India).
I like the fabric you bought and I really enjoy reading your blog.

i love reprodepot. I also order a lot of amy butler stuff from fabric.com

Decoratorsbest.com as already stated. I've only used it for wallpaper and I knew what I wanted.

I recently bought fabric from Lewis Sheron online: http://www.lsfabrics.com/.
I really like their selection & shipping was pretty fast!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for asking this question. I spend hours looking at fabrics online, but never did find any sources for designer upholstery fabrics. Since I used to have a retail design business I need my hit of Beacon Hill, Clarence House and Scalamandre online!

Fabricguru.com

KnollTextiles is also an open line and the public can purchase through their showrooms - most have samples in their showrooms too.

This may not be TOO terribly helpful, but I'm in the process of starting to sell fabric online. I don't have an online "showroom" or store, but if someone knows what they want, I can order it and ship to you. I can use paypal for secure transactions, and you can research fabric on the makers' websites. Just one small option.

Try Lewis and Sheron, Buyfabrics.com, fabrics.com, and Premier Prints.

Oh, I have a fabric purchasing problem too! Beautiful neatly folded stacks of future projects. My favorite online sources -

www.reprodepot.com
www.purlsoho.com

Also some Etsy sellers with really nice fabrics.

Don't forget about eBay. Lots of bargains to be had.

I love premier prints -- fun designer knock-offs (think Lulu DK) for $7.99 or $9.99 a yard, printed on nice, heavy linen.

I also completely agree with the eBay suggestion. You just have to know what you're looking for and then keep searching. I recently bought a few yards of a trendy Schumacher print on eBay for about 1/3 of the Decorator's Best list price. Now I'm riding the Chiang Mai Dragon train, baby!

I live on the southern Oregon coast where there are no decent stores to visit, so I must use online sources for fabrics, trims and notions.

http://www.designdivafabrics.com/

is my favorite fabric store. The site itself is fun to browse. They have everything and at great prices, too. Their service is wonderful.

I have also used:

https://www.glamorousfabrics.com/

http://www.designerfabrics.ca/

http://www.housefabric.com/

http://www.voguefabricsstore.com

http://www.jandofabrics.com/

Each of these has provided prompt professional service.

I got fabric from fabric.com. It wasn't uphostery - it was Amy Butler fabric for my daughter's room. BUT, I found a discount code on shopittome.com. ALWAYS check shopittome for chain store discount codes!

Hap Hanson said...

Try www.designdivafabrics.com
I've bought from them a couple times and have been very pleased. It's an especially good site for small amounts of FABULOUS fabrics and very, very good prices.

I work backwards. I look at the manufacturer web sites, where I can search by color, etc. Then after I fall in love, I go see if it's actually available by Googling the name, product number or whatever clue I can find. This often results in heartbreak (unavailable, out of stock or ridiculously expensive.) Sometimes it works out.

That being said, I've had some success with finding stuff at www.interiormall.com and I like
www.discountfabricsusacorp.com for the free shipping.

Great post. decoratorsbest and insidefabric are jewels i would have never known about. Fuck "to the trade only". why oh why weren't they easier to find on google? someone needs to teach them folks about the glory of internet marketing.

I just reupholstered my couch with classic Eames fabric I got on ebay. Try searching for Maharam or Knoll on ebay and you'll be happy with the prices.

I don't have any advice as far as where to find fabric online, but I just had to say, who the hell cares if something is "in" or "out" or if the trend is over, etc.?? To quote a line from one of the best movies ever, Little Miss Sunshine, "Just do what you love and f*ck the rest."

Except that it's like eating sweets. I *know* when I am putting the 9th truffle in my mouth that it's going to make me sick in about 5 minutes, but I have trouble resisting temptation. I know that anything meander-y or Greek-key-ish is going to have me growling any minute now.

Robin said...

OK, I know it isn't online, but if anyone is in the NYC area MOOD FABRICS on 37th street between 7th and 8th avenue has an unexpected treasure trove of upholstery fabrics that are insanely well-priced, as well as a drunk, disgruntled old salesman who wears large, black fuzzy boots. Some of the fabric is ick, but some of it is simply fantastic. They range from plain cottons to velvet, damask that is very Designer's Guild-esque, to faux leather.

Bromeliad said...

Since you all are encouraging my online fabric sickness - how do you decide on just one in the end?

i love, love, LOVE this site! a couple of weeks ago i was wracking my brain for sources. i've never forgotten drapes i saw at barney's, YEARS ago. made of a delicious dense felt, they came in beautiful colors and hung in a smart, sophisticated way.

someone mentioned lewis & sheron, which is right here in atlanta, where i live. they ARE fabulous. i'd also add the store within a store opened by their daughter, stacey. it's called staceage, and i PROMISE you'll love it! that girl has an EYE. should be at www.staceage.com. lots of amazing fabrics and trimmings we dont' see down here. really bold, eye-popping colors, wild textures, just incredible. FRIENDLY STAFF. i go there to lust...

and yes, britex is the bomb. i lived in san francisco and shopped there often. the people are super knowledgeable. you'll be in good hands.

i'd ignore silk road here in atlanta. they were pretty snotty, but the worst was that the selection was incredibly bland. a few good pieces here and there, but someone's sitting on their ass...now to scope out your suggestions!

Oh, and if you're in NYC, go to Branzelli (sp?) fabrics, a few blocks south of Bloomingdales. I just stumbled across it a few years ago - looks like nothing from the outside - but inside it was the bomb. Picked up some incredible brown mohair for 25$/yard.

www.underagreenroof.blogspot.com said...

forsythfabrics.com is the online version of Forsyth Fabrics in Atlanta. Great store, lots of great fabrics, with a super helpful staff. I literally have had this coversation with them: "So is it "heavy, heavy" or just "sort-of-heavy"?" It was billed as heavy, heavy, which was exactly what I wanted, and I could not have been more pleased. :)

A great place to buy fabrics is at P.Tree Textiles. www.GetYourFabric.com . They have a wide and GREAT selection of fabrics, from contemporary to tradtional. Silks, upholstery, cotton, linen, you name it and they have it. They also have quick shipping!! I order most of my fabrics from there. A+ quality. I wouldn't buy anywhere else!!

Check out Belraf Fabrics. They have a pretty good selection of both upholstery and fashion fabrics. I am a huge fan of their silks.
They give up to five free samples (and then just 20c after that) so you can see if the fabric really is what you are looking for.
www.belraffabrics.com
I have been shopping at their NYC store for years, but their new online shop is great too.

I really like http://www.nyfashioncenterfabrics.com/
You can really see the detail when you mouse over the fabric photo.

Spruce London said...

Hi I know this is an old thread. We at Spruce london have a good selection of fabric and we only sell online. The challenge for us as it is for all sellers of fabric or clothes online is to sell online something that until recently most people would only go to a shop for.
As some of you say it is the touch and feel that we cannot offer we overcome this through free fabric samples.
Many hours are spent photographing our products to produce the high resolution images which appear in the shop and and our fabric finder.
For the fabric finder we have taken a different approach to the usual colour swatches and word searches. A fast image gallery is used which shows all our fabric. This is possible as internet speed has risen dramatically.
I have found your posts very interesting and I am encouraged by the enthusiasm there is for beautiful fabric. We too love fabric. Our latest stock is here http://www.sprucelondon.com/fabric-by-the-metre/textured-fabric.html sourced at a fabric fair in Italy. Thank you for reading. I am ceo at Spruce london
