How beautiful and nicely wild.

The Times runs slide-show porn of the Carmel elf houses. It's enough to make me want to grow ironic facial hair, chop the heels off my boots, and play Jethro Tull on a flute.

Anyway, the post sent me to flickr and I found Decorno's awning:

This is what you need for a back door.

Decorno you've solved a mystery for me! I live in Carmel, Indiana and anytime I google something Carmel, Ca usually pops up in my search. I've always wondered what it looked like there. Thanks!

it smells good there.

Have you been to Mendocino? Beats Carmel by a mile. If you like the wild and wicked beauty of California's North Coast, you must visit. It's the place I chose for my country garden and it came with a house too!!

Great idea for Mother's Day! Did you do any shopping? Any gallery finds?

We stayed at the Senator's Cottage at The Tickle Pink. Amazing view (but the interiors need an update). Good service. Next door is The Highlands, which is a Hyatt hotel. Normally, I won't stay at a chain hotel because I prefer charm, but we needed room service (our hotel had none) so I went next door to The Highlands at about 9:30pm on Saturday, and it blew my socks off. AMAZING view. After the sun sets, the grounds (really a cliff with jagged trees clinging to the rocks) were uplight and dramatic and you could see moonlight ocean from the totally renovated 70s restaurant/bar with angled floor-to-ceiling windows (kind of Jetsons-meets-Dirk-Diggler). These two old dudes were playing standards and I just melted. It was excellent. I would stay there next time in a heartbeat. I listened to music for a while, had a gimlet, and then took back tenderloin sliders and crab cakes for ma. Cuz I am a good daughter.

The shopping in Carmel is not great. (It's for middle-aged people with not-great taste, honestly... but everything is cute and the town is cute, so I can't complain.) The one great store was Trouve, which I will post about soon. Lovely. And Jill, the shop girl, was super nice and lovely.

If you ever need a place to stay, (no room service) check out Lincoln Green Inn. Google it, it is amazing!
My best friend turned 60 last year and her husband took her there for the weekend and I surprised her by showing up and staying next door on her actual birthday. Absolutely wonderful!
