Formica to the rescue.

Ok, I asked and someone answered. (Read previous post).

Here we have Formica saving the day:

Before.

And after.

So, here is our adventure with laminate. Please note: this project is NOT complete. Still need to paint the door and much more. We are renovating an old home. We plan to stay here for a few years....but don't want to invest in something we will not use for a lifetime. Sort of like a flip, but we are going to live here for a few years. Perfect for our starting salaries (and starting family!) We spent 10k for this entire project (my husband is handy).

So the new stuff solves the problem of that gap at the edges, between vertical and horizontal sheets.

That kitchen looks fabulous!

This is a beautiful kitchen. Nice use of the neutral countertop to accent the dark cabinets and the tile work. Well Executed!

Looks fab - we all can't afford honed marble (which stains, chips and wears like a beatch anyway) The new laminates can look great if done right. Nice Job

Sheesh, that's an improvement. What would you call the color of the "before" cabinets? Not quite pink, or salmon. They're kind of organ colored. Organ Orange by Sherwin Williams.

Looks amazing! What is the name of the laminate used? I am looking for a good, neutral one like this. Thanks!

I think it looks great! As a Formica rep, I hear a lot of back and forth comments about laminate looking great, and it looking cheap. Formica has come a long way to offer products to a wide range of people. Let me know if you want me to post some pics from the website.
Your kitchen looks great...and I'm not just saying that. :)

Can you provide the name of the light fixtures? They are wonderful!

The pendants are glam eclipse.
I live in Ontario, Canada and was able to get them at a local Home Depot.

They are available here as well:

hi! so i know this post is already almost 2 years old, but by chance you would see this..... your kitchen is gorgeous! my husband and i are building our first home and going with dark espresso, modern cabinets but not sure what route to go with the counters. we are also doing formica and really like Carrara envision...but i have never been a fan of the 'seam' you can see with the lighter laminate colors, especially along the corner with the 'self edge' finish. BUT, i can't seem to see it on yours! did you do something special to avoid that on the edge? or did you go with one of the curved edges and i just can't tell?

thanks :)

thank you. to answer your question - curved edges!
